Philadelphia Eagles Fall Flat to Falcons in Defeat

If Michael Vick can't get the job done this year, the Eagles are in trouble.

The only birds to show up at Lincoln Financial Field Sunday were the Boo Birds.

After firing their defensive coordinator and promising to fix things, Coach Andy Reid ill-prepared his team as the Philadelphia Eagles were outplayed out of the gate by the undefeated Atlanta Falcons.

Boo Birds.

They took flight mainly in the third quarter, calling out "Fire Andy" as the Birds fell to the Falcons 30-17. They came out flat and fell flat.

The defense, under new coordinator Todd Bowles, played the same way: too many missed tackles and bad penalties and few stops on third down.

Quarterback Michael Vick tried to get the offense flowing and for a little while, the offense was rolling.

But the Falcons couldn't be stopped. They grabbed a 24-7 lead by halftime.

The Falcons, led by Quarterback Matt Ryan, took all the momentum by running a 16-play, eight-minute drive to start the game.

There were several key penalties, including a hold on defensive end Jason Babin for covering a receiver. When your leading sacker is covering a receiver, something is wrong with the defensive scheme.

Running back Shady McCoy tried as best he could and scored a few touchdowns, but the Birds could not put enough points on the board. DeSean Jackson tried to make some plays, but he didn't have many opportunities.

Vick never went downfield and often misfired on some passes.

The Falcons destroyed the Eagles, it's as simple as that.

The Birds were outcoached and outplayed. They were outclassed.

This team should have come out playing with fire in their belly. But there was no intensity.

The fans seem like they're starting to give up. That's never a good sign. Things are getting ugly.

The rest of the season could get even uglier.

The schedule doesn't get any easier.
