The Upper Moreland Parks and Rec Committee recently approved the purchase of two, double-barrel trash containers that will allow for regular trash disposal and recycling in the township.
Committee members voiced their opinions at the March 18 meeting of the need for more trash receptacles because of the littering issues downtown in the Memorial Park Drive area.
There was a debate of how many trash receptacles the township could purchase within the $5,000 that was budgeted. The township discussed buying five single cans, but ultimately decided to buy two, double-barrel systems at $1,996 apiece ($200-plus for shipping).
“We have a law that says we need to recycle,” Commissioner Kevin Spearing said. “There is trash all over the place downtown … I just want to get the trash off the street.”
Commissioner Donald Warner questioned if the township could buy cheaper cans.
“$4,600 for four cans? There’s no other quality manufactures out there who can make something for less?” Warner said.
Parks and Rec Director Pat Stasio said they looked into it and that “they’re all almost the same price.”
The cans will be placed along the Easton Road and York Road corridor, as well as York Road and Davisville Road near the courthouse annex.
The board said it will examine the trash situation next year and budget more funds if they need to purchase more receptacles.
“As a downtown supporter I’ve been waiting for these trash cans to come to us,” one resident said at the meeting. “We want to teach people who come through our township, as well as our own residents, that we recycle.”
